Glentress Trip Details

20, Oct

Hello everyone,

Firstly: we’ve roped someone into bringing a car so we’ve got an extra place or two, places are first come first serve – email captain-cycling@gusa.gla.ac.uk if you want one.
Meeting point: Behind the main gates

Departure: Friday 21st 7pm.
Accommodation: Tranquir Village Hall, Innerleithen
Arrival back in Glasgow: Sunday 23rd Early Evening

We will be heading to a supermarket on Friday night, so you can pick up some beer / snacks / any food you want. The club will provide breakfast on Saturday morning at Sunday morning and possibly dinner on the Saturday evening (though we may need to collect in an extra quid or so to actually afford this).

We’ll probably stop at a chip shop on the Friday evening for those of you who are finishing late and won’t have had a chance to grab dinner.
You will need to bring:

  • Bike
  • Helmet
  • Riding gear (pack for bad weather)
  • Change of clothes
  • Sleeping bag / Sleeping mat / pillow
  • Money (especially for those who haven’t paid the full balance / membership yet)
  •  A towel and change for the showers at Glentress
  • Spares & tools (a multi-tool + spare tube is a good idea)

Note: If you want to have a shot on any of the Trek Demo bikes you will also need to bring photo ID (passport / driving licence) and a credit card to be left as a security deposit. Also, anyone has got a projector or a decent set of portable speakers then bring them too!

Any questions, pester us on facebook.com/GlasgowUniversityCycling.

First Social!

20, Sep

Just a quick note to say we’re having our first pub-meet/social this Wednesday (21st) at the Old Schoolhouse on the Gibson Street end of Woodlands Drive. This is a temporary arrangement until we sort a regular venue for our weekly socials, but please come down and say hi, meet new members and plan some rides. We’ll be there from 7:30, hope to see you there!

If you’re not sure where that is, here’s a map:

Freshers Rides & More

16, Sep

Hello everyone,

Thanks for showing such an interest in the Cycling Club over the past two days at the sports fayre!

Freshers Rides

Saturday 17th September, 9am meet at the University Main Gates. We are running two rides, one road and one XC mountain bike ride on Saturday morning. We hope that these will give new-comers a taste of what we do as a club and the chance to meet the committee and some of the current members. The mountain bike ride will either be to Mugdock country park or Pollock park, depending on fitness and ability of who turns up. The trails will NOT be super-technical or difficult but a decent, working mountain bike will be required. As for the road ride, the current intention is to head south of Glasgow at a fairly relaxed pace avoiding any monster hills and busy roads. Again, while this is an easy paced social ride, a well maintained road bike will be needed as well as the usual water bottle, puncture repair kit etc. Lycra is optional, as are shaved legs (for the boys at least..!) We don’t anticipate this ride being any further than a 30 mile loop, max.
Please come along and give us a try, I promise it will cure your hangover, and if you’re not having fun then you can always cut the ride short and head home.

Glentress/Innerleithen Weekend Trip:

As we may have mentioned at the sports fair, we are planning a weekend trip to the Tweed Valley, the countries top mountain biking destination. This is open to everyone and will give the chance to explore some of the best man-made mountain bike trails in the country at Glentress and Innerleithen. Riders of all abilities, and disciplines(downhill and cross country) are welcome and there is even a good bike hire at Glentress for people who want to try the sport out for the first time. Obviously, roadies are also welcome.

We are still ironing out accommodation and transport but it is hoped that this trip will run in mid October, details will be available soon!

SSS Mountain Bike XC Championship

After an extremely successful event last february, SSS Cycling (Scottish Student Sport) will be running a one off cross country mountain bike race, this time at the brilliant venue of Drumlanrig Forest in Dumfries & Galloway. This is a lap race of a small circuit open to all students in Scotland and can be taken as seriously or as casually as you like. The proposed date for this is the first or second Saturday in November but further details will be published in the coming weeks. We will be looking for a big GUCC team for this!

For more details check our forums or our the GUC facebook page.

Endura Clothing- ORDER NOW!

21, Aug

Hello everyone!

We’re now (finally!) taking new orders for jerseys. We’ve got a very early mock-up produced by the committee that we’ve sent off to Endura who will be adapting it into something awesome for us all to wear!

Whilst this is just an initial doodle Endura have plenty of experience with adapting peoples random sketches so we’re sure we’ll end up with something you’ll all like.

You can order any item from their custom range and it’ll come with our unique designs & logos. However as there is an 8 week wait for production and design we’re taking orders now and trying to get at least one run done as soon as possible. Thus the deadline for any orders is Friday the 26th August, i.e.: THIS FRIDAY!

How to order

Pick out what you want from the Endura custom range. Take note of the item ID then fill out our order form with your size.  Enter all your details along with your intended payment method then email the completed form to Fergus at: 0800796m@student.gla.ac.uk and we’ll get back to you with how to make payment.

We need complete payment in order to place your order – we can accept the money via cheque, cash, or direct bank transfer.

If you’re an ex-student, non-member or just starting this term you’re welcome to join in and order some kit as we’ve placed no limits on who is able to order (University Staff are welcome too!). If you’re an ex-student that has since left Glasgow then we should be able to arrange to post the kit to your new location, but please mention this when placing your order!

Any questions feel free to ask via Facebook or email:captain-cycling@gusa.gla.ac.uk

Congratulations again to Eilidh Wells who came in 1st in the Womens Champs and to Kate Elliot who came 1st in the Womans Sport category. We’d like to thank everyone who completed and of course the wonderful organisers at St Andrews who made it all happen.
